Custom ID badges can be used for a number of purposes. They can be used to step up security in your office, they can be used to identify people at a seminar, or they can be used as an entry card for conventions and special events. In the past you had to get these special identification tags professionally designed and printed. However, today you can take advantage of desktop publishing tools to design and create your own custom ID badges in your office.
If you are throwing a special event and need to create ID cards for your attendees then custom ID badges are a great alternative to name badge stickers. When designing your custom id badge make sure that you include all the information that is pertinent to the event. For example, if you are throwing a training seminar then you will want to include this information: attendee’s name, their job title, their company affiliation and what type of admittance they will be allowed. For example you may have all access admittance for people interested in attending all of the seminars and seminar activities, and a limited access admittance badge for people who only want to attend specific lectures or seminar activities.
Custom ID badges also work great for employee ID passes. When designing your employee ID badge you will want to include: a photo of the employee, their name, their job title, department and your company logo. It is a good idea to laminate these badges to help them last longer. Some companies have also started adding bar codes to their employee IDs to prevent forgeries and to increase security.
There are several considerations you need to make when putting together your custom ID badge design. First of all you will want to decide what size and shape your ID badge will be. You will want to make sure that your badge is large enough to hold all of the information needed, large enough to be read, yet small enough so that it is not cumbersome. Next you will want to decide what type of badge holder you want to use. There are pin on badge holders, clip badge holders and badge holders that utilize a custom neck lanyard.
Custom ID badges and pins can be used for a variety of purposes. They can be used to add extra security in your office or venue, they can be used to identify people at a workshop or seminar, or they can be used as an entry card for conventions and other special events. Custom ID badges also work great for employee ID passes. When designing your employee ID badge you will want to include such things as a photo of the employee, their name, their job title, department and your company logo.
negativ:
- das Bedienen und Bespielen ist eine kleine bis große Gedultsprobe;

1. Creating business cards. If you’re self employed or run a small business, you know how expensive printing business cards can be. If someone leaves your employ, or the phone area code changes, all that money is down the drain. Most printers and stationers work to standard designs anyway, so your business card looks pretty much like all the rest. With your own DTP software you can really let your imagination rip, and design a unique and memorable card. You can then print it out on your color printer and save a bundle – you can even get pre-cut card to print your design out on that can make your work indistinguishable from a professional job.
2. Designing letterheads. Just like business cards, really, only bigger. You can get them offset printed by the ream, or save the design as a file and print out the letterhead every time you print out a letter.
3. Custom DVD covers and labels. Making movies is fun (I know), but if you make home movies and videos, and burn them onto disk yourself, the label that comes with the disk looks pretty boring. It’s easy to design an insert to go inside the DVD case – and a matching label – using your DTP software. Now your epic can take pride of place on the shelf alongside the professional ones from the video store.
4. Making banners and posters. Throwing a party? Want to advertise your goods or services? Got an event you need to publicize? Banners and posters are a simple way to catch someone’s attention. The traditional way of creating them is by using markers and paints. A combination of your DTP software and color printer is much quicker – and less messy!
5. Designing flyers. Scale that banner or poster down to half a page, and you’ve got a flyer to hand out.
6. Typesetting newsletters. A newsletter is the easiest way of letting customers, or members of your club or other organization, know what’s going on. Typing them up on a word processor is fine, but use your DTP software to make them more eye-catching, and your newsletter is more likely to be read than trashed.
7. Magazine layout. Go one further and layout your own glossy magazine with pictures ad text put together in full color. It’s easier (and cheaper) than you may think.
8. Product packaging. Think package design is the preserve of expensive design shops or advertising agencies? Think again! Most package design these days is done using computers. “Reverse engineer” a package by taking a similar sized one apart to get the dimensions, build your own template from the measurements, then let your imagination run wild. You’ll be surprised at what you can come up with – and how little it will cost.
9. Laying out a catalog. If you sell multiple products, or just want to let customers know what’s in your shop or store, a catalog can keep you uppermost in your customer’s mind. Designing it using your own DTP software means you can easily update it without having to pay a fortune to an agency.
10. Designing a yearbook. Don’t let precious memories fade away. A yearbook isn’t just for high school. Use your DTP software to organize pictures, facts and reminiscences into a document you’ll treasure forever.

The tutoring industry is a quickly growing field, but typically it is fragmented with individual tutors teaching out of their homes. Students have to travel to the tutor’s home or sometimes the tutor will travel to the student’s home. Weather and traffic can also be problematic for tutoring sessions occurring on time. With the advent of the Internet, online tutoring sites have popped up, but many have not flourished because of a number of reasons, one of which is that the student and teacher have not been able to see each other, like in a typical face to face session. Several tutoring companies have developed a new desktop video teleconferencing services that solve this problem.
With this new technology, the student and teacher each use their webcams and the Internet to broadcast their live video to each other. Now, you have face to face interaction and the tutor can tell if the student is paying attention or is distracted by other interferences. The tutor can also read the facial cues of the student to see if he or she has a puzzled look or any other cues that indicate retention or confusion. The video feed also allows the student and teacher the ability to look at books, homework, or SAT/ACT preparation materials.
This new desktop video technology has a built in whiteboard so the teacher and student can write math formulas or English sentences to assist in the learning process. Homework assignments can be scanned by the student and downloaded to the teacher so that both can see the materials. The teacher can also download study guides and materials to the student for review. The technology also has a recording and playback feature that allows the student and teacher to record their sessions for later review.
Desktop video technology can be used in a class setting with videos being displayed for up to 15 students on everyone’s screen. Also, with the technology, VOIP or voice over Internet protocol can be used or a conference bridge can be used for a richer voice experience. With the VOIP, both the student and teacher require a microphone and speakers.
With university admission requirements getting tougher and tougher, demands upon students to make better grades or score higher on their SAT or ACT tests is increasing every year. In order to improve these measurements, students are studying longer and using more tutors to assist them in difficult courses or in preparation of the SAT/ACT tests. Students are turning to more online tutoring companies to help them when traditional tutors fall short or are not available. Desktop video conferencing technology is making the learning experience more “like being there” and many tutoring companies are in the forefront of the technology.
Mike Burns has been in the conferencing industry since 1971, having originally worked for Southwestern Bell and AT&T. In 1989, Mr. Burns founded Conference Pros International and in 2000, Mr Burns founded A+ Conferencing, a conferencing provider that sells exclusively through master agents and resellers. Mr Burns is a partner in American Tutors Online, a tutoring company that uses start-video.com desktop video conferencing to enhance the tutoring experience. Mr. Burns speaks and writes about the conferencing industry frequently.
